Are you usually conscious about the lyrics of the music you listen to? Everyday we are exposed to millions of messages expressed through music. Moreover, it is part of human creativity and a way of freedom of expression. However, music has two components that can eclipse one another: lyrics and instrumental.
Sometimes, we are attracted to different types of genres depending on how they sound, its rhythm, melody or just because they are incredibly sticky. They are a delight to the ear!! But seldom we do pay attention to the lyrics whatsoever - or we are not conscious of it-.
The most common example of this is Reggaetón music. The majority of the songs that belong to this genre promote mainly gender violence. But have you ever heard merengue or salsa in this kind of situation?
We invite you to see what is Hidden in the rhythm!
Objectives:
Raising awareness of our cultural musical consumption in order to realize what the lyrics mean.
Identifying through peace linguistics the gender violence in Merengue by the deconstruction of its lyrics and analysis of merengue, one of the most popular Latino music in the world.
Before starting the activity:
Can you recall songs that are gender violent that do not belong to Reggaetón? Please think about 2 of them. What do they transmit? What are the lyrics saying?
Here is an example:
“Mala mujer - Sonora Matancera” Check this song out. What does this song transmit? What are the lyrics saying?
NOW LISTEN TO THIS SONG, KEEP A CRITICAL EAR ALL THE TIME:
While listening
Listen to the song carefully and take two phrases/sentences out of the whole song that you think generates gender violence. And write them in the following chart:
Make a copy of it and then fill it out.
Post activity
Please write a short paragraph (3-5 lines) as a reflection about the song. Here, there are some guiding questions that you can pick up so as to get some inspiration.
How do you think this song is violent?
What is your takeaway from this activity?
How can this language influence our thoughts?

¿Sueles ser consciente de la letra de la música que escuchas? Todos los días estamos expuestos a millones de mensajes expresados a través de la música. Además, la música es parte de la creatividad humana y una forma de libertad de expresión. Sin embargo, ésta tiene dos componentes que pueden eclipsarse entre sí: la letra y la instrumental.
A veces, nos atraen diferentes tipos de géneros dependiendo de cómo suenan, su ritmo, melodía o simplemente porque son increíblemente pegajosos ¡Son una delicia para el oído! Pero rara vez prestamos atención a la letra, o simplemente no somos conscientes de ello.
El ejemplo más común de esto es el Reggaetón. La mayoría de las canciones que pertenecen a este género promueven la violencia de género. Pero, ¿alguna vez has escuchado merengue o salsa en este tipo de mensajes?

Sensibilizar sobre nuestro consumo cultural musical para darnos cuenta de lo que significan las letras.
Identificar a través de la lingüística de la paz la violencia de género en el merengue mediante la deconstrucción de sus letras y el análisis del merengue, una de las músicas latinas más populares del mundo.
Antes de iniciar la actividad:
¿Recuerdas canciones de violencia de género que no pertenezcan al reggaetón? Piense en dos de ellas.
Si no se te viene alguna a la mente, escucha la siguiente canción:

Escucha atentamente la canción y toma 2 frases / oraciones de la canción que creas que genera violencia de género. Luego, complete la siguiente tabla.
