Reminiscences of The War

Actualizado: 29 nov 2021

(Miroff and Pina, 2016)

Dear reader, in this blog, you will find the cruel reminiscences of the war in Colombia, the most impressive anecdotes told by Yurluey Mendoza, who got to be part of the longest internal armed conflict in the history of the country. Also, by the time of the interview, she was looking forward to becoming a civilian again as a result of the Peace process between the FARC-EP movement and the Colombian Government. You will find her voice in a personal narrative collected from an edition of the Washington Post Journal that relates what it is like to live a twenty-year long imprisonment in the thick and challenging Colombian jungle.

Objectives

  • Foster critical awareness about the conflict in Colombia and its cruel consequences for victims based on the critical reading of an article that gathers a personal narrative from a participant of the conflict.

  • Reflect on the importance of peace for Colombian people’s lives.

Activity

All the questions of this activity will be answered in the following padlet:

1. Pre- Reading Activity

Think about the following concepts and mention on the padlet what comes to your mind.

  • War

  • Armed Conflict

  • Guerrillas

  • Reincorporation

  • Peace

  • Forgiveness

2. While-Reading Activity

  1. Go to the following link and read the article called ‘Do you know what it’s like to spend 20 years at war?’ https://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/world/2016/09/30/a-colombian-rebel-discovers-soft-beds-and-iphones-after-20-years-in-the-jungle/?itid=lk_inline_manual_23

  2. Answer the following questions on the padlet according to the information you will find while reading.

  • At the beginning of the narrative, an important and contemporary event that changed the history of the armed conflict in Colombia is mentioned. Which was it? Do you remember what happened in the country with that event?

  • Which are the factors that led her to join the guerrillas?

  • How do you see the transition she was proximal to face from an armed way of living in the jungle to the reincorporation to a civilian life?

  • What thoughts and feelings does the content of the story bring to you?

3. Post- Reading Activity

  1. Share your thoughts, views, and ideas on the following questions on the padlet:

  • Who do you think should intervene in the Peace process?

  • As citizens and future teachers, how can you contribute to the construction of Peace?

  • What effects can the Peace Agreement process have on the lives of civilian citizens and reintegrated people?

  • Do you think Peace is important to Colombian people? Why?

  • If you had a person like Yurluey Mendoza in front of you, what would you ask or tell her?

You can review the theoretical framework, references and bibliography for this proposal in the following link:
